All Call
– A function of a paging system that allows all zones or areas to be paged at the same time.

Amplified Speaker – A one-way paging speaker that has an amplifier built-in. Also has a built-in volume control. Uses –24 VDC power.

Ambient Sound – A level of sound that exists as background noise, usually generated by machinery, air-handling units, or other mechanical devices.

Background Music – Music, generated from a radio, CD player or other audio source that is played over paging speakers typically at a lower volume level than the level of paging.

C.O. Line – A Central Office telephone line supplied by the Telephone Company. Typically, buildings have several C.O. Lines.

Employee Alarm System – This system will provide warning to employees alerting them to necessary emergency actions as called for in the emergency action plan. It will provide necessary reaction time for safe escape of the employees from the affected work area.

Employee Plans – Any employer written safety plan utilized to alert employees of emergency situations or pending threats.

Group Call – A function of a paging system where selected zones or areas are paged at the same time.

OSHA 1910.165 Compliance – To meet the intent of the standards set forth in 29-CFR-1910.165 regarding employee alarm system notification. OSHA 1910.38 Emergency.

PBX or PABX – A Private Branch Exchange, sometimes called a PABX (Public Access Branch Exchange) telephone system that routes internal and external phone calls within a building. PBXs are privately owned and not supplied by the Telephone Company.

Power Units – A simple method of measuring current (1 power unit is about 50 milliamps), that most commercial paging products are rated for. Peripherals, such as amplified speakers, are rated in how many power units they require to operate. Power supplies are rated in how many power units they supply.

Supervised Speaker Wiring – The ability to detect system wiring defects with speakers and automatically report trouble condition to the employer.

Time Clock Tone – Activation of a paging system’s tone generator, typically by a contact closure from a master clock. Useful for work stop-start tones, break tones, etc.
